The "VW 1500" made its debut at the 1961 International Exposition of Automobiles in Frankfurt, Germany, as a two-door sedan ("Notchback"). A two-door station wagon ("Variant" or "Squareback") and new Karmann Ghia ("Type 34") soon followed. These Type 3s were wider and longer than traditional Volkswagens, and more luxuriously equipped and trimmed.
